Out of Province Inspections in Grassland, AB

Understanding out of Province Inspections

Out of Province Inspections

What is the purpose of Out of province Inspections?

An Out of Province Inspection ensures your vehicle meets Alberta’s safety and equipment standards.

The inspection must be performed in a licensed facility by a journeyperson technician who is licensed to perform Out of Province Inspections by the Vehicle Inspection Program. The inspection can take up to 2 hours on average but may vary based on the type of vehicle.

Inspection facilities determine the cost of an inspection or re-inspection and must post those costs in plain sight. We encourage you to contact various facilities to determine your best option.

How long do I have to register for Out-of-province inspections in Alberta?

After passing an official Out-of-Province Vehicle Inspection, Alberta Transportation gives you two weeks (14 days) to register your out-of-province vehicle. Following that, you must obtain a new inspection report to register your vehicle.

If your vehicle fails the inspection, Alberta Transportation gives you 10 days from the original inspection date to repair it. However, after 10 days, a full inspection fee assessment will be applied.

Vehicles repaired and presented for re-inspection within these 10 days will only require verification of the outlined necessary repairs.

What do you need for an out-of-province inspection in Alberta?

In numerous instances, privately-owned vehicles imported to Alberta require a one-time out-of-province inspection. Such inspections ensure the vehicle complies with all the safety standards mandated in the Motor Vehicle Act Regulations MVAR.

Furthermore, if you are relocating from another province, you must complete the inspection to register your vehicle because different provinces in Canada have different safety requirements.
